I have been fascinated by the works of Roald Dahl for a long time, ever since I saw the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Then there was the book, and then it was on. I wanted to know everything the author had ever written and created.
The story is about a giant, quite good-natured and nice. And also about a girl who is attracted by her serenity.
The main thing is that children like the book. The series is excellent, with several excellent books by the author. Translated as a whole is not even bad, which to me, now a rarity for books in Ukrainian.
Dahl’s works just need to get acquainted with, because he wrote exciting stories not only for children but for adults as well.
I really want to collect all the stories for children, but so far we have only two, “Big and Friendly Giant” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Although the book is a children’s book, I’ve had a lot of fun with it as well. It is truly a brilliant creation, by a talented British writer.
“Yesterday we didn’t believe in giants either! Today we don’t believe in shishgirls! Just because we haven’t seen something with our blinkers, we think it doesn’t exist.”(c)

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read by Roald Dahl. It is written lightly, with humor, so much so that it was hard to resist laughing in some places, and the language is superior to anything I have ever read before. The skill of the translation should probably be noted here, because it takes a lot of talent to invent such words and combinations (just look at the labels on the jars of dreams). The child got great pleasure only from trying to correct everything the Giant said and wrote. So, when the story ended and the last page was turned, the little girl could hardly hold back her tears: is that it? Will there be no more continuation?
Despite the fact that the book is a children’s book, it raises a number of very “nonchildish” questions. Especially when the Big Friendly Giant and his new girlfriend Sofia discuss the nature of people and giants, because people are really very cruel, and they have forgotten how to believe in miracles and their own strength, and they can dream only in childhood
A very good book. I recommend it. Cheering up while reading is guaranteed.

My wife and youngest son forced me to read “Airborne” or “The Big Friendly Giant.” Well, they made me read it, because I got tired of their secret conversations about shamburulka, oygirks, and all sorts of giggly things, so in order not to feel ignorant, I started studying the world of giants. And I didn’t regret it at all. “The Airborne is the most fun book by Roald Dahl I’ve ever had the opportunity to read. Colorful characters, unusual and funny dialect, for the good translation of which, special thanks to translator Viktor Morozov, the amazing adventures of a little orphan in the land of bloodthirsty giants add up to a surprisingly interesting adventure story.
The book praises the courage of little Sofia and the Big Friendly Giant, who is actually the smallest in his land, who were not afraid to stand up to huge, evil monsters who had a nasty habit of eating people. With the help of their courage and ingenuity, as well as the help of Her Majesty, the Queen of England, to whom our heroes were not afraid to appeal, the evil ogres were eventually punished, and the airborne troop was able to live peacefully and serenely in the land of giants, fulfilling their immediate duties – giving people dreams. It’s a great story that you can’t help but like and will make you smile more than once while reading it.

I am writing this review only because my children read this book with great interest. And it became their favorite.
The whole story is about the adventures of a seven-meter giant and a little girl named Sofia, which have long been a board book for young readers in Europe and the United States. And so my children and I got to this classic.
The first thing that tempted me was the mention of the Queen of England and the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force.
Children’s favorite moment in this book is the giant’s monologues. Because their language is a special language with distorted words. And this bribes children. After all, their language is also somewhat imperfect and spiced up) (for example, the sweetest snowstorm is worth a lot)
I think the main thing is the children’s love for this story and the fact that I, as a mother, approve of this text. It can both teach and provide some questions for reflection. It is worth it! I think this book is relevant for children aged 7 to 10. These are the years, I believe, that are sensitive for understanding and learning the lessons from this book!
I advise, advise and advise again!

I bought it for my second grader on the advice of a friend. First of all, I would like to note the very beautiful translation into Ukrainian. Generally speaking, books in Ukrainian come in two versions: in the “usual nightingale” and in the one that no one speaks (for example, words like “you’re right”, “as if”, “very” are Ukrainian words, but I have never heard them in everyday life). So here the translation is excellent, no less punny than the original, and with a local flavor – a real masterpiece) And it’s not just about the “infusoria-cup”, “happiness” and “blood”.
The giant himself speaks a special language, twisting ordinary words, which also adds a certain flavor to the atmosphere of the work. A typical orphanage story (of which there are thousands in life) is played out in the book simply masterfully, and with a happy ending. I really liked it! In addition, throughout the story, the giant raises several global (controversial) questions about humanity. For example, that humans are the only creatures that kill their own kind. And that the same people do not believe in something if they cannot see it. And what it’s like to be a stranger among your own, to collect dreams and dream of learning to write properly. That is why the story is also instructive.
By and large, the book remains a children’s book, so I hope that the child will like it. To summarize: “Ababagalama” has once again created a miracle, and for those who are learning to read, the book will definitely be interesting: a wonderful edition, excellent translation, and a simple story.
