A successful ending to the series that will not leave even the dead indifferent. If you want to go through your own triggers, swallow water (or opium smoke) in a vain attempt to swim out of the swamp to the surface with the heroine, reach the very bottom, and finally push yourself up, then this is the place to go.
The opium war is over, the rebellion is over, and the civil war is now upon us. The story goes in a circle, and Zhin is persistently looking for a way out of an a priori hopeless situation.
A huge advantage of this volume is the development of the protagonist, though it is quite specific. In the ending, the girl is about 19 years old, two of which she spent in a bloody meat grinder, three in a school closed off from the world, and the rest in a remote provincial shop. There will be no Nobel Peace Prize for theoretical research: all the bits and pieces and conclusions drawn are backed up by brutal practice.
The topic of war is ruthless and very personal. The author literally shouts that there is no such thing as “burning and killing,” and then suddenly there is a happy ending. Devastation, epidemics, famine are welcome. Formal victory is followed by a period of recovery, and the victor (perhaps without an arm, with burns and paranoia) risks being crushed by administrative burdens and logistics.
The romantic line is drawn with an invisible dotted line, although even the word “sex” has appeared!!! Zhin. And sex. Yes. Anyone who has read at least the first volume will understand. The triad of Zhin-China-Neja is the perfect trio of Young Adult: idealism, logic, and pure chaos. And what a delicious religious dogmatism here, mmm! I wanted to kill (both sides, which is typical).
In my opinion, the ending is as fair as possible, although it is far from what yesterday’s kids have imagined. I forgot to breathe, I wanted the characters to overcome all obstacles and find a solution. And in a sense, they did, but the triggers, my goodness…
Should I read it? Yes!!!! But remember that the author is not going to spare you, the author shows you how not to.
