An interesting book about the talented detective Hercule Poirot, who takes on another investigation. This time, Poirot receives a letter from an American millionaire who asked him for help. However, upon arriving at the place, Hercule Poirot and Hastings learn that Mr. Renault has been murdered. As usual, many people are under suspicion. Especially women, who turned out to be the main suspects in this novel. As it turned out, another corpse was found at the villa later, which confused the local investigators and frightened the visitors of the villa, but the clever Poirot does not give up, he acts according to his plan and succeeds. The victory is on Hercule Poirot’s side, he manages to solve the mysterious story of the murder (even though it was not easy) and get to the truth.

With each book I read, I am convinced that Agatha Christie is fully deservedly considered the queen of the detective story. “Murder on the Golf Course” is a wonderful book and one of my favorites.
Although Poirot and Gunstings do not have time to save Mr. Renault, they could not leave his murder unsolved. From this point on, the fun begins, the book is full of characters and their stories, but at the same time so skillfully and structured that they complement each other and form a harmonious picture. With a large number of characters, it is obvious that there are a large number of suspects. And each of them is guilty, but it’s just a matter of figuring out who is guilty of murder, who is guilty of treason, etc. And it is worth noting that it is not easy for Poirot to do this, because everyone lies, trying to hide their “little secrets,” some of which are really not important, and some are significant.
Captain Gunstings and his fascination with good girls clearly did not help the investigation. But for me, in this book, he opened up from a new side and showed how loyal he could be.
In general, the ending of the story is unpredictable and undoubtedly unsurpassed and reminds us that sins and secrets will always haunt us and no matter how much time has passed, we can never be sure that if a crime remains unsolved for 10 years, the killer will escape justice, especially if Hercule Poirot takes over the case.

For me, this detective story stands out among other Agatha Christie stories: it is written in such a way that Arthur Hastings, Poirot’s assistant, comes to the fore. The technique of the amateur assistant, which is quite common in detective stories, was introduced by Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie makes full use of it in the adventures of Hercule Poirot, squeezing the maximum out of Hastings’ character. On the one hand, he acts as a narrator, shading the whole story (he admires the protagonist, helps him, and at some points doubts him), in short, a kind of tuning fork. He produces false versions, but with benefit: he finds important clues or notes characteristic details, but he cannot analyze them. In this way, the author throws important elements of the charade to the detective, and distractions to the readers. Hastings is a typical Englishman and perfectly sets off Poirot, that is, they set off each other perfectly, a kind of tandem of “typical” British and foreigners, which creates a lot of moments for the subtle and rather mild irony that is typical of Agatha Christie.
Hastings is present in many stories about the Belgian detective, but in most of them he is still a secondary character and narrator. But in Murder on the Golf Course, he is given his full play. Firstly, he has a full-fledged romantic line (quite confused with murder, of course). Secondly, Poirot is in a kind of competition with the police detective in charge of the case, and Hastings is quite amusingly torn between loyalty to his friend, his own versions, his own romantic interests and admiration for the aggressive method of official investigation. As a result, he comes to the fore and acts quite actively; in any case, this novel is the “Hastings story” for me.
The murder around which the plot revolves is, in my opinion, successful: confusing, but ultimately logical, verified in all details, well-written and psychologically motivated. Everything is expected here, after all: you expect Agatha Christie to be of this level of skill.
I definitely recommend it for an easy and at the same time fascinating read (in case you are the lucky one who has unread Agatha Christie detectives).

To my surprise and embarrassment at the same time, this book is my introduction to the great Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.
This detective story so quickly filled my mind that it was impossible to tear myself away: the exquisite description of the characters, the attention to detail, the lightness of the author’s pen immediately transports you to the murder scene, as well as a series of other locations in France and England. Throughout the book, Poirot provides his companion, Captain Hastings, with many clues and little puzzles that should lead to the truth. Not even a second passes before the reader realizes that he himself can take part in this fascinating and at the same time exciting investigation.
The immersion is guaranteed. At the end of the story it is not clear who is behind it all, for there may be two or even three characters under suspicion.
In terms of personal perception, the ending is a little twisted, and it seemed that the story could have ended 10-20 pages earlier, but no – you have to read to the very last line. Lots of surprises await you.
Definitely 5 points!

“A Murder on the Golf Course is an example of Agatha Christie’s early work and probably one of her most famous novels about Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings. Writing a review of a detective story is always difficult – you risk revealing the secret and spoiling the impression for future readers. Therefore, I will limit myself to saying that Murder on the Golf Course gives a good idea of the writing style of the famous British author. If you want to know what a “classic Agatha Christie detective story” is, read this novel. It has everything: a twisted plot with numerous unexpected twists and turns, the cynical and cold calculation of the criminal, and, of course, the ingenious method of investigation from Hercule Poirot. There is even the drama of human relationships, because at some point the old friends Poirot and Hastings found themselves on opposite sides of the barricades. Although I have to admit that despite all the twists and turns, I suspected the criminal from the very beginning, and about halfway through the book I was finally convinced who the killer was. That is, the reader’s own investigation is also possible 🙂
The novel was filmed as part of the famous British TV series Poirot by Agatha Christie, but I advise everyone to read the book first. In the movie, many interesting episodes were not reworked in the best way or even thrown out altogether. This is especially noticeable in the tense finale, the best part of the novel, in my opinion. The movie version is significantly inferior to the book. Agatha Christie portrayed the female characters very vividly, but the series does not convey their charm. So read the original, ladies and gentlemen!)
