As in most cases, I find out about cool books thanks to TV series/movies. That’s exactly what happened with Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood and Company series, which I started reading after watching the TV series (which I loved).
“The Screaming Staircase” is the first part of the adventures of Lockwood, Lucy and George, who work together in an anti-ghost agency, which 50 years ago began to appear all over England and which only children and teenagers can see.
It was an incredible book – original, exciting, interesting, mystical, with a touch of humor. Definitely 5/5 and a special place on the bookshelf and in the heart!

I recommend it to everyone! This is a dynamic ghost story with a detective flavor. In part, it reminded me of a mix of the TV programs Investigated by Psychics and Battle of the Psychics. So here we have The Screaming Staircase, the first part of the Lockwood and K° series.
There is a Problem – a massive apparition of ghosts that has struck modern Britain. To neutralize them, there are various agencies and the Department of Psychological Investigation and Control (DEPIC), which controls them.
This is how we learn about the Lockwood & Co. agency and their agents, Anthony Lockwood, Lucy Carlisle, and George Cabins. They are tasked by a client to neutralize a ghost. But not everything goes according to plan…
By the way, I expected the story to be narrated by Anthony Lockwood, the head of the Lockwood & Co. agency, but no, it was Lucy Carlisle. I actually liked it.
The ending of the book has an interesting ending that hints at a sequel. So the second part is just around the corner. What awaits the main characters?

A very nice, not at all childish story. It’s perfect for teenagers, but adults will also find it quite interesting! I am delighted, very vivid characters, not a boring plot. They say that the next parts are a blast, I will definitely read them!

I put off the Lockwood & Co. dilogy for a long time because I thought it would be like Harry Potter. But to my surprise, this book is more like Ghostbusters, with its own world and history.
We are told about a team of teenagers who hunt ghosts, or as they are called in the book, the Guests. The agencies in the fight against the Problem consist exclusively of children, because they have a knack for recognizing sounds and various manifestations of chimeras.
When Lockwood and Co. find themselves in a difficult situation, Fairfax comes to their aid with a rather complicated order. He has acquired a castle that is crawling with ghosts and wants to get rid of them. But what motives this famous man has for hiring a mediocre company we will find out throughout the story.

“Lockwood & Co. The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud follows the adventures of three teenagers – Lucy, Lockwood and George – in a gloomy, mystical, haunted London. For many years now, the peaceful life of people has been disturbed by a problem – the appearance of rather unfriendly ghosts that can not only harm, but even kill a person. Agencies with teenagers who have a special Talent come to the rescue in this case. It is thanks to this talent, as well as practical skills, that the agents manage to neutralize the enemy. Young Lucy Carlisle will not only have to develop her talent by finding a job, but also find true friends with whom she will solve a mysterious 50-year-old murder, which will lead to the discovery of an even more mystical place, literally full of ghosts. A fantasy teenage detective story, The Screaming Staircase is quick and easy to read, and at the end of it you have a strong feeling that it is just a preamble to the main adventures of the friendly trio. We should also mention the simply masterful cover with illustrations by Ivan Sulima, which complements the overall atmosphere!
