What would you say about a person for whom the rule “My desires come first” has become a life motto? An egoist? A sage? An upstart? No, the novel, as the title suggests, is about a financier. But Dreiser’s character turned out to be so ambiguous, so multifaceted, despite the apparent clarity of his actions, that only after reading it do you realize that it’s great that this is only the beginning of a trilogy and you can continue to watch the weaving of Frank Coverwood’s life.
But to go on a long hike, you need to take the first step, and to enjoy the continuation, you need to start from the very beginning. I would like to note right away that the novel is quite voluminous and describes the life of one man in the second half of the 19th century in the United States against the backdrop of global changes: economic, political, changes that swept everyone together and individually. And so, in such a difficult time, a difficult child, Frank, is born into the simple family of the Coverwoods. Step by step, we observe the process of growing up and becoming a young man who, even as a child, shows considerable ability in financial matters. His courage, extraordinary mind, ambition, determination and readiness for any fraud and actions to win, to enrich himself, turn Frank into a genius in the world of finance and a cynic in the world of people.
I can say with certainty that reading this novel sometimes reminded me of a ship trip: with complete calmness at the detailed description of financial issues, bills, stocks and exchanges, when you do not fully understand why the author describes in such detail all the illegal financial moves of enrichment (maybe Mr. Dreiser wanted all his readers to become rich, like Frank 😉 ). But everything about Frank’s relationships with others filled the sails of my ship like wind, and I was rushing headlong to solve the only question: who is this financier Frank Coverwood? A crook and a swindler, or a strong and strong-willed man, an egoist and a scoundrel, or a man who defied everyone by wanting to build and live his life without looking back at others, without needing anyone else’s approval?
Undoubtedly, the novel left many questions that I am pleased to reflect on and look forward to the answers in The Titan and The Stoic.

The Weekdays of a Financial Genius The most basic impression of the novel: a rather interesting, but surprisingly unemotional book. Not boring, but no response at all, a curious combination. All the way through, I listened to this book completely aloof, though, with no desire to abandon it or “speed things up.” Such is the case. Reading “The Financier” was something like another “challenge to myself. And all because some time ago I read a book by Dreiser and we are with her so “did not agree in character,” that I have not since returned to him. And I didn’t even think about going back. And then at some point I decided that it was necessary to give the author and myself a second chance. And here is the result – meeting with the famous Frank Cowperwood, a financial genius and just a charismatic man who lives by the principle of “my wishes come first.
Love and love, please. He doesn’t really care how you feel about him, though. In any case, he doesn’t give a damn about your opinion. Or rather, the gas horn. His vocation and his greatest talent is making money. Anywhere, anytime, on anything. It seems that literally out of thin air, but in fact it helps him an incredible financial instinct, the ability to quickly get to the heart of any case, an amazing self-confidence, bordering on outright effrontery, and also – courage and scope. Where others are hampered by caution, he is not hampered by anything. No, he does not rush headlong into crazy ventures without thinking through first, but where necessary, not afraid to risk a lot to get more. And more often than not, he wins. He has had this business acumen since childhood, and as he grew older, it began to border on a kind of genius.
