I bought two books in this series because I really liked the illustrations.
The pictures are very detailed – you can just look for hours.
The story in the book is short, without much of a cautionary tale: just stories from the lives of mice. At the same time, the text is beautifully written, nice literary speech. Since the book is small, you can read the story before bedtime to a child – it takes a little time. Also, I think it would be suitable for independent reading in the first grade – the book is small, the font is good, it’s interesting to read because of the colorful illustrations.

First of all, the books of this series attract attention with their incredibly atmospheric drawings, the design instantly immerses you in a fairy tale, and the division by seasons adds novelty to familiar landscapes. The fairy tale itself is sweet, family-friendly, my daughter (4 years old) really likes to re-read and look at the pictures, often it is the books of this series that she brings when she has a hard day and we both want a calm, measured reading, and at the same time her eyes rest on something beautiful. I bought all 4 books about the seasons with great pleasure, and each of them was a favorite in its own way.

Do you know the fabulous stories of Beatrix Potter about rabbits? Jill Barklem’s series is very similar in atmosphere and drawings, only the characters are not fluffy ears, but very cute mice.
The story is cozy and kind. It makes you want to look into a wonderful place called Blackberry Hedge, where hardworking mice live. Illustrations, of course, play a major role in creating this atmosphere. You can spend hours looking at the mouse houses depicted in section: kitchens, cells, antique furniture, and even a mill with an interesting internal mechanism.
The story is a simple one about the wedding of two mice: Makivka Yasnoeka, a beautiful girl who works on making butter, and the funny Mr. Deren Pylko, a miller who even managed to come to his own wedding covered in flour dust.
Such stories make you feel warm and cozy, and you want to create a cozy atmosphere and start eating in a well-cleaned kitchen. I think children will be interested not so much in the story itself as in the unusual illustrations. Or as a quiet reading before bedtime. If they like it, there are other books in this series, which is great – you don’t have to puzzle over which book to buy next.
