Alphabet of War is one of the stories of the Russo-Ukrainian War. It began being written back in 2015, when Yevhen Stepanenko, as part of a medical unit, was fighting in Eastern Ukraine, and his daughter Solya was waiting for her father to return from the front lines in peaceful Kyiv. It’s an honest and touching conversation about war and life for everyone: for both children and adults.

The book is structured as an alphabet, where each letter represents one of the dimensions of war and peace around it. It intertwines the life of a child in a peaceful city with the life of a father at war. Solya writes to her father about her activities, school, friends, competitions, dances, and pets, and also asks both childish and not-so-childish questions about the war. How do her father and his comrades live over there? Are there children at the war? What do they eat at the war? Is it possible to be cunning in war? Will her father be different after the war? And the father, simply and honestly, yet gently, explains everything in the world to his little daughter.
