I was surprised to learn that the author is a young man (only 39 years old). The wisdom and prudence in his books is enough for 100 or even 200 years of life. And this is without any strained philosophical reflections and instructions. It’s just the story of the life (or rather, attempts to die) of one grumpy, annoying old man who lost a loved one and now doesn’t know what the meaning of his life is and whether there is any point in continuing it at all. And this is enough, believe me!
Sometimes, it is enough for a “smile to the ears” that will not leave your face for a long time, and sometimes, for hundreds of rivulets of salty tears that will roll out of your eyes from time to time.
It is interesting that the book began with a blog – Bachman wrote stories about a grumpy old man on his page, and his readers liked it so much that they persuaded the author to write a book about it (and he was probably very much against it).

“Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it doesn’t exist, and yet it is often one of the greatest motivations for living. Some of us eventually become so aware of it that we live harder, more persistently, with more ferocity. Some need its constant presence to even realize its antithesis. Others are so preoccupied with it that they enter the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. all that anyone could possibly need but ourselves.”
– Fredrik Beckman, a man named Uwe.
I just adore this book. Beckmann’s writing is pure and simple, at times deceptively so, with its gentle, episodic and occasionally repetitive structure. The story is riddled with loneliness, life’s many disappointments, and the great gray weight of the real; the final chapters pack unexpectedly wild emotional punch. But this is tempered by a sense of quiet celebration.
A note of hope permeates the writing, slowly building, and the small details are as gripping and moving as the larger narrative: moments of connection, the awakening of a person frozen in grief, the ability of people to touch each other’s lives.
Everyone should read this book!

Bachmann is love from the first reading.
⠀
Everyone will find something of their own in his works. Because they have funny moments, sad moments, and sincere feelings.
⠀
Uwe is a real “gift”. He is a stubborn, meticulous, and sometimes boring man who can’t seem to end his life.
⠀
What could be interesting for me in such a book? Almost everything.
⠀
Not immediately, but page by page, I began to see a different Uwe, understood the reason for his anger, sympathized with his troubles, because in fact Uwe is a very good man who did not deserve all the trials that fell to his lot.
⠀
After the death of his love, he becomes completely alone. That’s why he wants to go after her more than anything. But fate has its own plans.
Uwe’s life is interrupted by a young couple who move into the house next door, have two small children, and a clingy journalist and a street cat.
⠀
Each new hero needs the old man’s company and help, and Uwe, though grumbling, refuses.
⠀
The book is based on a movie. First I watched the movie, then I read Bachmann’s book. And I can say for sure, the movie is also cool. It is almost completely the same as the book, the differences are quite minor.
⠀
As for me, I will definitely recommend this book to all my friends. And I will continue to get acquainted with the author’s work.

Loneliness is terrible for everyone, as they say “a man needs a man”, no matter how old you are. This book is about the terrible time when you are alone, without your loved ones, and all you can do is remember your past life and live day after day in complete solitude.
My fate gave me few happy days with my beloved woman. He lost his mother and father early on, and had to learn to live alone. Left alone, he dreams of meeting his beloved wife as soon as possible.
Uwe doesn’t like the company of people, he is a reserved person and very frugal.
One day Uwe meets a family that will give him a chance for a second life, he will feel needed again and find the meaning of life. When someone needs your help, it makes sense to live on.
A book that will 100% touch your heart. Bachman is the author who makes you laugh to tears, cry, and definitely think deeply.
Read it, the book is worth reading. Although this is the second book by this author, the first one did not impress me (grandmother), but this one is great, I will continue to get acquainted with the author’s work in the future.

A book that evoked a lot of emotions in me. Reading one situation brings tears to your eyes, and a page later you have a smile on your face. I had never read anything like it.
It was with A Man Called Uwe that my acquaintance with the author began, and I don’t regret it at all, because after reading it, I immediately bought other books by Bachmann.
So what is the book about? After the death of his wife, a 59-year-old man named Uwe can barely force himself to live. His job is the only thing that keeps him going, and then he gets fired from it.
What to do next? How to live? How to find the courage to stay? Will Uwe be able to regain the sense of meaning that had filled his life before?
The first few pages are not that interesting to read, but later the author’s witty jokes do the trick. And the story itself is not at all banal, but even intriguing. It takes a lot of effort to tear yourself away from reading, and this novel has definitely become one of the best books I’ve ever read. The author’s writing style deserves special attention.
