Let’s just say I liked the book. The very picturesque descriptions of nature and the burning loneliness of the main character from her childhood are the main mood of the work.
It has a special atmosphere and I enjoyed reading it. But the other characters in the book, except for Kaya, are kind of bland, as are the plot twists. The ending, in my opinion, was predictable.

The story. Kaya was six years old when her mother ran away from her hard life. Then all her brothers and sisters gradually left, and the girl was left with her father, who drank heavily. Kaya was left alone when she was ten years old. And since then, she has been providing herself with everything she needs. She used to collect mussels and sell them, and with this money she bought what she needed. Imagine a ten-year-old girl taking care of her home alone, far from civilization. Kaya might have been happy to socialize with other children and go to school, but the one time she went, the children laughed at her and called her the Swamp Girl. Nature was her solace and salvation – birds, shells, plants, everything she saw around her. And it’s a pity that the two guys who could have pulled her out of her lonely life turned out to be jerks. If they hadn’t, the murder might not have happened.
The book made an incredible impression on me. It was interesting to observe the love and respect with which the author opens up the amazing world of the marches for us. The wild life of the girl is also impressive. I would gladly recommend reading Where Crayfish Sing.

It’s quite difficult for me to finally evaluate this book. On the one hand, the author’s writing style is simply unrealistic and lulls you to sleep, and on the other hand, there are some plot twists that make you roll your eyes. I really liked the part of the book that described Kaya’s childhood. How her mother, brothers, and sisters abandoned her, how she lived with her alcoholic father for four years. And yes, why does everyone write that she was left alone at the age of 5 if the last family member left when she was 10? But this does not change the essence. The child learned to get food on her own, to do the housework, to take care of the house and herself. This is quite strange, although theoretically possible given the stories of our grandparents. But the way the girl learned the alphabet at the age of 14, and at 15 was already reading biology for the last grades of school. The way she independently mastered the skills of accurate, anatomical drawing of plants and animals. The way the best representatives of the village sought her attention. It’s too fabulous and implausible. Although the text is very beautiful and the descriptions of nature are extraordinary. I was also pleased with the end of the story, and the aftertaste stays with you for a long time. So I can’t say anything definitively. Be guided by your tastes.

This is a story about a girl who was left completely alone at an early age. It is also a story about a woman who has managed to master her life. The detective line and the line of warm lagoons and dangerous swamps are combined in Kai’s story…
This fairy tale novel is really fascinating, it allows you to plunge into the atmosphere of events, to experience the events that take place in her life with the main character. The story provides a field for reflection on this side of life, on rejection and intolerance, on acceptance and love.
I will definitely return to the book next summer!

When I finished this book, my only regret was that I had put it off for so long.
This is a very touching, sincere and bright story about the difficult life of Kaya. Prejudice, human indifference and cruelty forced such a wonderful girl to hide and live (even survive) alone all her life.
It is heartbreaking to imagine a little girl, all alone, collecting oysters to sell in order to buy basic food.
Kaya loves the area where she grew up, collects bird feathers, draws beautifully and knows so much about nature.
She will have loyal friends who see her as a wonderful person and support her no matter what.
In this story, there will be a murder investigation in which Kaya will be accused.
This investigation caused the most emotions – the lack of evidence, but the desire to condemn a girl who is not like everyone else.
Kaya is a sympathetic character, so you sincerely worry about her fate until the last page.
