The Witcher. The last wish. Book 1

Synopsys by Andrzej Sapkowski
The white-haired witch Geralt of Rivia, one of the few representatives of the once numerous trade of defenders of the human race against the creatures of inhuman evil, travels through small kingdoms that can be seen from a castle tower and large cities, receiving payment for what he has been trained to do – destroying eyelashes and munchkins, strigas and whippersnappers. But the witch also has his own code, in which murder is only a last resort, and a reasonable life, whatever it is, is still a life. This is how he makes new enemies, but also finds friends who will someday change his fate. The first commented edition!

“The Last Wish was not what I expected. There’s no structured, familiar plot, just stories ripped from life about a certain Geralt from Rivia. This hero is a kind of combination of Sam and Dean Winchester + a little bit of magic with the difference that he doesn’t save the world for free. He’s a scary monster slayer whose fame is spreading like wildfire.

I liked the app about the creatures, which briefly describes what this or that monster is.

I was pleasantly surprised by the way the author wove world-famous fairy tales into the work. And a bonus for me is the humor and sarcasm of the main character, which, unfortunately, is completely absent in the series prototype.

The fantasy world is not fully understood, but I hope that in the next parts the author will reveal it more and wider.

The first book of the saga of Geralt the Witch of Rivia is just a smooth entry into the story, the beginning of a long saga. Geralt is a witch, a mutant, modified by spells and tinctures to have superhuman powers, trained in a witch citadel. He is a hired killer whose task is to cleanse the world of evil. However, Geralt is a witch of principle. He does not seek to kill everything for which he is paid, but only that which really does harm. And often these principles get in the way of someone.

This book consists of several unrelated stories scattered in time and space. In each of them, Geralt fights evil, sometimes mythical, sometimes real, fights monsters that threaten people, and sometimes people who threaten monsters. In one of the stories, he even meets the love of his life, but it is still a very long way from “family” happiness, if that is possible for a witch.

All of the stories are linked by interludes that tell of Geralt’s stay in a monastery where he was treated after a fight with a monster. It is here that certain hints emerge about Geralt’s Destiny and his future fate.

Be sure to read this classic if you like fantasy, especially if you like “rehashing” the plots of famous fairy tales. If you’ve watched the series, you should watch it all the more, because the book is very different from the series in terms of plot (and much clearer).

The Witcher has become a cult book around the world, and for almost thirty years it has brought fame to Andrzej Sapkowski. Every year the book becomes more and more popular. And every year the book gathers thousands of new fans around it.

The book is very interesting and original. The world the author describes is spacious, beautiful and unsurpassed.

In general, I don’t really like to read fantasy books, but this book made me fall madly in love with this genre. In my opinion, the author has successfully divided the book into chapters. And each chapter is a separate small adventure. But gradually these chapters intertwine with each other. Some chapters are so interesting that you want to re-read them. I liked the last chapter about the genie the most.

I believe that my acquaintance with this author was a success.

This particular book will appeal to all fans of the fantasy genre. I want to say that this book is not a continuous novel. “The Witcher. The Last Wish is a collection of stories that are connected by small details. But this only makes the book more interesting and original.

This series of books has brought Sapkovsky a large number of awards and enormous popularity.

I advise everyone to read this book. You will plunge into it.

A strange wanderer in an unusual world where a variety of creatures live together with humans, looking for work, hired by people to protect them from various magical creatures. He is not surprised by anything, wisely and tactfully remains silent to hurtful words and conversations, and gets down to business with a full understanding of the problem. This is the Witcher we meet in Andrzej Sapkowski’s first book. It is the first book that reveals the character of the protagonist, and it is after reading it that you realize whether you can love this character and follow him further, or whether it is better to leave everything in its place. Although it’s hard to dislike him, even I, a person who is not particularly fond of fiction, sympathize with him quite a bit. So I’m going to read the next books.

A high-quality fantasy world is partly understandable to Ukrainian readers, because it resonates with Slavic mythology. There are mermaids, werewolves, and other evil spirits, though they are partially modified by the author’s imagination. Another interesting discovery for me was that in some chapters I can guess the motifs of various fairy tales.

So if you want to plunge into the world of quality fiction, welcome to the ranks of The Witcher fans

The cover is hard, but the design looks like an advertisement for a game. I don’t really like it. The design of the book itself is good (there is also a map that helps to understand where the action takes place, but I wish there was more contrast, because it’s hard to find anything there). In addition to the story itself, there are some explanations that were quite interesting. The translation seems to be quite good, but I don’t like some moments (flour instead of flour, or a beak, or confusing their/their). It’s also strange that they didn’t immediately explain in the course of the story that a dwarf is a dwarf and a dwarf is a dwarf. Until the end of the book, I thought that they just couldn’t decide whether to write it with a “g” or a “d” (if I hadn’t read about the translation, I wouldn’t have guessed. I have nothing against the idea of gnome/dwarf). But the proofreading is poor, with typos almost every 10-20 pages. After the two-book Leoburg, where there were 1-2 errors per 100 pages, this quality is disappointing. I’m also a little surprised by this dance in the chapter on translation about translating into “close languages” that translators have to rely on because people are used to certain names and phrases and if you change them, it will be a disaster. In my opinion, this is nonsense, and a translator should show his or her own vision of the original, abstracting from other translations as much as possible. Because those who are used to another translation will not be interested in it anyway, and those who are not familiar with the history (or did not have time, or are from a new generation) will get acquainted with it through your translation. There was also an example with three translations of Harry Potter. I can give my opinion as someone who has read two of them. The transition to a different terminology was not too difficult for me, and I regret that I did not immediately get my hands on the translation from Ababagalamaga. So the question is not about the terms, but about the quality.

This book is a collection of short stories that introduce us to the witch Geralt and the world in which he lives. In general, the backdrop is a kind of medieval (I would even say Western) Europe, of course, there is magic and various monsters. The author raked up all the monsters in a row, so to speak, everything that was lying around, so don’t be surprised at the resulting mishmash. The plots are based on various European (and not only) fairy tales (some of which are widely known from Disney cartoons). I would even say that this is a rethinking of old stories from the point of view of an adult. And here we come to the characters, their dialogues, and this is what I consider the best part of the book, which makes these stories fresh and interesting. It is also worth mentioning the author’s light and humorous style. Sometimes I thought I was reading a parody of a Disney cartoon. I was also pleased to see that the plot resolutions are always logical and can be traced in the course of the story and even predicted a little bit (that is, not the case when you know how everything will end at the very beginning, but when you understand where everything is headed as the story develops).

Even though it was mostly a reinterpretation of old stories, it seemed to me that these stories became the foundation for the rest of the story. “The Witcher tells us about Geralt of Rivia, his profession, how he approaches things. Naipaul.
