The Kaidashev family

Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky (1838-1918) was a prominent Ukrainian realist writer who wrote more than fifty novels, novellas, short stories, fairy tales, and plays about folk life. The master of words aimed to explore the “untapped mines” of Ukrainian life as deeply as possible and create true images of people from all walks of life. The colorful characters, juicy humor, and bold combination of the tragic and the comic made Nechuy-Levytsky’s works real gems of Ukrainian prose. According to Ivan Franko, the novel “The Kaidashev Family” is one of the “best pieces of Ukrainian literature.” We meet the characters: Kaidash, his wife Marusia, and their two sons Karp and Lavrin at a crucial moment in the family’s existence, when the children grow up, choose their mates, and begin a new life.

One of my favorite works of school literature, to which I still return from time to time, is Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky’s The Kaydashev Family.

The plot is already canonical not only in literature but also in the culture of Ukraine in general. It tells the story of the Kaidash family-the parents and their two adult sons, Karp and Lavrin. However, the relative peace and grace in this family ends when the sons bring home their wives. Now, not a day goes by without another quarrel, sometimes even a fight, in the Kaidash’s yard…

I love this story, which is filled not only with Ukrainian flavor, but also with the author’s wonderful humor! 5/5 from me!
