A hodgepodge inspired by the literary works of Robert Sheckley, Stanislav Lem, Philip K. Dick, and the cinematic works of Ridley Scott and James Cameron. This does not prevent it from being a wonderful example of a new level of Ukrainian contemporary prose.
An unemployed space biologist with a possible hereditary disease accepts an invitation to work in the opposite corner of the galaxy.
Will the decision to fly to a remote planet with his family be a good one?
It’s up to you to decide whether this novel is science fiction or social psychological. But the dynamics and cinematic quality of the plot will not leave anyone indifferent.

A book happened to me.
I would never have thought that I would be so into science fiction.
This book captivated me from the first pages. Although sometimes I wanted to give the protagonist a whipping.
The story takes place in the distant future. Space biologist Gil is offered a very well-paid job, but not on Earth, but on the distant planet Ish-Chel.
He has doubts about whether he should fly to an unknown place, and even take his family with him. But after thinking and weighing it up, it doesn’t matter where he dies, whether on earth or on another planet. Because his genetic disease may soon start to progress.
And he decides to fly to this distant planet.
When he arrives there, he sees that everything is not so bad. Even his family relationships have improved.
Even the non-terrestrial animals that could tear them apart did not frighten them. They got used to them, the main thing was not to touch them.
But it turned out not to be as good as he thought.
Over time, some strange things began to happen. Things that Gil needs to understand and not only understand. And it turns out that he also has to save his family and not only his family…
There will be giant reapers, a forest devil, deathbugs, the omnipresent mushroom factory, and chimeras. And there will be the most chimeras.
But the ending seems to me to be somewhat open, maybe there will be a sequel.
I don’t know what took me to this book, but I fell in love with it. I will definitely read other books by Pavliuk.

Epic work, great job. Excellent plot, style. Everything is thought out: technology, weapons, space travel, alien animals, a lost civilization, the actions and logic of the organism that took over the planet Ish-Chel. There is an interesting story behind each name of the planet where the Conquistador Corps operates. There is a hidden meaning to everything.
The characters of the main characters are vividly written, their actions logical and consistent. Although they all act on their own goals, which often contradict the goals of the other characters.
A space biologist cannot find a job on Earth. There is nothing to pay off the mortgage. The marriage may collapse. And it is at this point he receives a good job offer from the “Corps of Conquistadors. True, he will have to work on a planet in another galaxy. His friend gives the biologist good advice: You’ll get a lot of money because you’ll put your life on the line. You don’t get paid a lot of money for nothing.
I liked the book a lot. It’s a ready-made movie script. The plot is fast-paced and the events unfold at a dizzying pace. I would put this book on a par with the Liu Cixin trilogy or the movie Avatar. I would have loved a sequel. To know how the fate of the main characters turned out. Considering their talents and experience they gained on Ish-Chel, the “Corps of Conquistadors” could have involved them in other operations on other planets. Even on IshChel, the issue is not completely resolved. Yes, humanity on that planet has been defeated twice, but has it deployed all its power, technology and knowledge? It would be a grand battle when two parasites would come together in a battle for the planet: an alien organism and a human being who exploits the resources of his planet Earth just as ruthlessly. Who would prove to be the more clever and cruel is the question.

A book that stays in your head for a long time after reading it. Space, colonization of other planets, alien flora and fauna, mutation… sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? The story centers on a biologist named Gil. He is unemployed, his little daughter and his wife are waiting for him at home, with whom he has been less and less understanding lately, he is inevitably haunted by the diagnosis of a terrible disease, and he has less and less money to live on. It seems like a hopeless situation, but fate throws up an opportunity that Gil has never even dreamed of – a space expedition to another planet – how can you refuse such an offer? Accepting the offer, Gil could not even imagine what would be waiting for him on the distant planet Ish-Chel! When the truth was revealed, it would be too late… or maybe not, is it ever too late?
I recommended it to all my family and friends and everyone gave me positive feedback! I am also pleased that this is contemporary Ukrainian literature, which is not inferior to famous foreign authors. The plot keeps you in suspense, the characters are interesting, multifaceted, easy to read and leaves a pleasant aftertaste.
It’s a mixture of King’s thriller, sci-fi, and the movie Alien).
I recommend it for reading!
