“The Color of Magic is a novel that became my first acquaintance with the work of Sir Terry Pratchett, and I was very pleased with it. Many experts advise not to start your acquaintance with Discworld with this book, although it was written first, but it so happened that it was the first one to appear on my shelves and I just couldn’t resist. I think book lovers will understand me – such positive reviews about Pratchett’s work, plus the incredible design of the book from the Old Lion Publishing House (I am very glad that they took on this series and are so active in publishing it. It’s also very beautiful).
So, the book tells the story of the adventures of Rincewind, a failed wizard, and the first tourist in the Discworld who wants to get the most out of his trip. The novel is written in a unique style – so easy, interesting, and most importantly – with humor! I wanted to re-read almost every page and analyze it for quotes! I love good humor, so this book and I hit it off.
The only drawback, in my opinion, was the lack of a coherent plot – it’s a kind of set of stories about adventures. But still, the book is just great!

All this fanaticism about the author passed me by. I only found out about his existence the year before last, when I started reading books on the Yakabu book marathon. And only now ripe for a personal introduction.
The design of the book is amazing. In fact, because of her, I decided to start reading Pratchett. Here and embossed cover imitating wood, excellent illustration on the binding. Upon opening, you are greeted by blue fronts, with a geometric pattern. The lettering is in the tone of the forzases and that’s cool. The paper is of high quality, pleasant to the touch. The font is readable.
On the content of the book itself, frankly, I’m disappointed. The world Pratchett built is fascinating, detailed and unusual, but the style of narration, as well as the characters themselves I was more irritated. For the first 100 pages I still maintained interest, but then quickly tired of the fact that half of the story the author turned into a kind of prequel to the events unfolding in the beginning. I gave up on the book for a couple of weeks, but decided to read to the end to form a final opinion. I took it out that the tourist has become even more annoying to me, and the cowardice of the wizard is completely intolerable. In general, it did not go well. If I ever give the author a chance, it will only be an electronic version.

I’ve been looking at this author’s books for a long time, but I couldn’t get started with him – his fantasy world seemed too intricate to me. After all, the series of stories about the Discworld includes a total of 41 novels and 5 short stories. And it is with “The Color of Magic” that the acquaintance with the Discworld begins. Here we learn about the structure and its structure, the population and distant worlds and Galaxies. It’s a good thing that I chose this book to get acquainted with Pratchett’s fantasy cycle (quite by accident).
So far, my feelings about this acquaintance are mixed. Everyone praises the author for the unique wordplay he uses in his novels. But in translation, this magic disappears – it would undoubtedly be more interesting to read in the English original.
Here we meet Rincewind, a misfit who has agreed to be a guide for the first tourist in the history of their town. This is where the adventures of this elusive couple begin. Another small detail is that the tourist is “accompanied” by a magic chest with a hundred legs that follows its owner everywhere. A pun and all!
In the mix of adventures, dangers, and feats, the reader gets acquainted with objects and subjects that he could not even imagine.
But in general, I liked this story, it makes me smile and definitely surprised!

The eighth color of the rainbow? Isn’t that crazy? In this case, no. After all, the action takes place not on our planet (and not on the planet at all), and in a mysterious and not very Flatland!
Just your dream flat-earth – the space flies a turtle, and it has four elephants. And the elephants hump and hold the disk (don’t ask about their comfort, they’re fine). And the rules in this world are fantasy too, like flat-earth dreams! But you can tell from the above that Flatlander is primarily a joke. The Color of Magic is the first novel in the Terry Pratchett series, but the level of humor, satire, and irony is extremely high. Specifically, this book quips at the clichés of fantasy and our world. Who says heresy like our world can’t have clichés, right?
The main character is the wizard Rinswind. Wizard Rinswind is a loser. To be honest, he’s not a wizard at all. Got kicked out of the Academy for reading the diary of the local Creator. And so this dubious cowardly man meets a naive cowardly man – the first tourist of Ploskomiry. And here we go…
The main merit of this edition is the design. Seriously, this is how you should design a book to want to buy it! The paper is thick, good and pleasant to the touch. Worthy of praise for the translators, though not without flaws. But what can you do without them, right?

I love fantasy and decided to get acquainted with the works of Terry Pratchett.
And I am delighted! Pratchett’s funny, ironic, and adventurous fantasy is something else.
So, the first part of The Color of Magic introduces us to the Discworld and its inhabitants. This world is located in the endless expanse of the intergalactic ocean, where the great Turtle swims. Together with the main characters, we go on adventurous adventures in a new and interesting world. I laughed so hard at the completely non-random accidents that chased the tourist and the unlucky wizard. It’s hard to explain, you just have to read and enjoy!
It seems to me that my acquaintance with the author was very successful. We became friends with Terry Pratchett for a long time, because this series, with all the cycles and works outside of them, has about 40 books. I think that in the future I will have all the beauties from this series on my shelf!
The book will definitely appeal to fans of quality fantasy and anyone who loves good humor and adventure. I highly recommend paying attention. Have a great reading!
