After reading The Surgeon, which I really liked, I decided to continue my acquaintance with the author. This is the second book in a series of novels about detective Jane Rizzoli and forensic scientist Maura Isles. The novel was first published in 2002.

The plot of the book takes place almost a year after Rizzoli sent the Surgeon to prison. A wave of brutal murders is sweeping Massachusetts again, a maniac copies the Surgeon’s handwriting, and soon he escapes from prison. Now there are two killers and Jane realizes that she may be the next victim.

Tess Gerritsen surprised us again. The thriller turned out to be as good as the first one – it’s dynamic, shocking, and has plenty of twists and turns. Before you know it, you will realize that you have already read the novel. The author has an easy writing style. I noticed that Tess, as in her first thriller, did not fully tell about the maniac, about his motives, but I do not consider this a disadvantage.

It is worth warning that here, as in the first novel, there is a lot of blood, scenes of violence, medical facts. Therefore, this is not for everyone.

So, I am satisfied with the book and, if it were possible, I would give the novel not 5, but 105 points)

    Enjoy your reading.

The Assistant is a sequel to The Surgeon.

The Surgeon is in prison, but the city is shaking with new murders. The killer’s handwriting is the same as the Surgeon’s. Now the victims of the murders are married couples.

Rizzoli takes up the case again, because last year she experienced the horror of meeting the Surgeon, and now her mind is again constrained by the memory of past events and the fear that everything can happen again and this time the victory may not be hers.

Suddenly, it becomes known that the Surgeon has escaped from prison and is back to his old ways with his partner.

Compared to Tess Gerritsen’s other detectives, the Assistant is a little weaker. Just a little bit. There are some notes of predictability, more descriptions of the relationships between colleagues, personal vicissitudes of life, etc.

The beginning of the crimes leads to the past, which is completely unexpected. So much so that the investigation may not end.

A lot of attention is paid to the psychological portrait of the killer and forensic details.

A person who has killed once and enjoyed it will kill again and again.

There are moments of incompleteness and unanswered questions.

The Assistant is a quality detective story, not a banal one, for readers who like suspense. This time I give it a 4.

My joy in discovering Tess Gerritsen’s novels is overwhelming! She writes quite easily and at the same time is exciting, interesting and dynamic. I like that there is a whole series of books about Detective Rizzoli.

It’s so cool to return to the world of familiar characters and go on new adventures with them again. Yes, of course, somewhat violent and bloody, but still adventures.

“The Assistant” is not only a narrative but also a sequel to the first part of “The Surgeon”. In this book, we meet both old characters and meet new ones.

Jane finds new friends and encounters an old enemy, the maniacal Surgeon, who managed to escape from prison to complete his acquaintance with the detective. It is a rather unusual scenario when one famous serial killer joins forces with another maniac and they start hunting together.

The novel reveals new traits of the protagonist’s character and immerses us deeper into her experiences. We learn more about her life and personality. At the same time, readers will find a cool plot, perhaps somewhat predictable, but fascinating.

An action-packed detective thriller by Tess Gerritsen, the sequel to The Surgeon. The novel is about the search for a psychopathic criminal who is trying to follow the example of an imprisoned murderous doctor.

A year ago, police detective Jane Rizzoli tracked down and arrested the serial killer Warren Hoyt, but was seriously injured not only physically but also psychologically. This criminal case, even over time, has left her with anxiety, nightmares, and panic. A new killer appears in Boston who, in committing his bloody crimes against couples, reproduces the expressive rituals and some of the actions of the “Surgeon”. In this investigation, Rizzoli is assisted by the old detective Vince Korsak and, oddly enough, the FBI, represented by the young agent Gabriel Dean, is overseeing the investigation.

From the very beginning, the search for the criminal does not yield proper results, and the number of victims is growing. At the same time, Warren Hoyt escapes from prison, and now there are two brutal killers who have united, risking everything, and started a joint bloody hunt, and their main prey is Detective Jane Rizzoli.

The book is dynamic, contains several storylines, and the author has well described Rizzoli’s experiences, the crimes of the killers, and the elements and methods of work of detectives and experts. But, as for me, the ending of the novel is very simple and not sufficiently thought out, the motives of the second maniacal killer “The Assistant” are not clarified and the essence of the relationship between the two criminals is not revealed.

Tess Gerritsen is an American writer of Chinese descent who has created a series of bestselling medical and romantic thriller novels. “The Assistant” is the second book after “The Surgeon.” (I hope that in the future there will be other books in Ukrainian from the series about Detective Rizzoli)

After Detective Jane Rizzoli has put the Surgeon, and now her own enemy, away, she can finally breathe easy and return, albeit partially, to her normal life. Or can’t she?

She is a strong and strong-willed woman who has spent her whole life having to prove to everyone that she is no worse than others, that she is worthy. First to her brothers, then to her mother, and later to her work. Yes, she has managed to make a great career and gain respect from her male colleagues through her hard work and professionalism, but they are still like predators, just waiting for her to make a mistake or to back down. Her mother doesn’t notice her, her sons come first, but if Jane does or says something differently than her mother wants, she automatically falls under a waterfall of criticism and reproach.

Though the wounds on her palms have healed, those scars are a daily reminder of what happened and what was to come. Though her life was broken, the belief that the Surgeon was far away and would not be able to come out for a long time helped her. But one day the terrible past began to return…

The book The Assistant is written quite easily, interestingly, and intriguingly. I really like the fact that while reading it, images appear in my imagination, as if I were watching a movie. Especially for me, a big plus is that while reading, you don’t just perceive the information provided by the author, but look for some evidence, even insignificant, and start to suspect everyone. After all, who knows who might be the Dominant, the one who will make Rizzoli’s peaceful sleep disappear for a long time.

Tess Gerritsen uses medical terminology perfectly and successfully in the book, and explains it to the reader in an accessible and simple way. That’s why we can say that the book is a kind of a treasure trove of medical research and secrets.

I recommend the book to those who like to be not only a spectator of a criminal case, but also, in a sense, a colleague of the detective.
