It’s been a long time since I took up a book that I couldn’t put down every night for a long time. But when I was advised to read The Six Crows, I was not only delighted, I fell ill with the views of Ketterdam, and even more so with the Bochka. The author has managed the impossible: to combine the fanatical beliefs of the Middle Ages with the ceremonialism and at the same time the East End motifs of the Victorian era in order to create a fantasy story, sprinkling it with a significant hint of steampunk.
It’s rare to combine a really dynamic, exciting plot with good characterization and make sure that everyone grows up with each new chapter. Nevertheless, this is exactly how the reader sees the Misfits gang – six dangerous people in their own way, who are not very warm to each other, but are nevertheless still bound by the same chain. Or rather, by a common task that can cost all six lives at once.
In fact, this is one of the key features of Lee Bardugo’s book-the main characters are far from saints and will never be. And some of them may even add a few more items to their already extensive “track record.” However, they can be forgiven for this, given their difficult fates. Kaz, breaking all obstacles to pieces, seeks to avenge the death of her older brother, Inez dreams of hunting slave traders on her own ship who captured her and sent her to the Menagerie, Nina hopes to improve her relationship with her former drusskel Matayas after each of them betrayed the other, Jesper is already waiting for riches, and Whelan just wants to find his place in life, completely detached from his cruel hypocritical father. It is fascinating to see how this company is forced to find a common language in order to survive in foreign lands. And then it finally becomes clear that, despite all their sins, the “crows” are still more honest than any rich man in Ketterdam and Fylde.
The author also touches upon such social issues as social (and sometimes racial) inequality, issues of non-traditional orientation (indeed, only the blind could not notice the hints about Jesper and Whelan), prostitution, fatalism, and even shamanism. Not to mention the open question of the scientist’s responsibility for his invention… It is very thought-provoking.
We should also mention the geography of the world there. This is where it becomes apparent what the real name of Li Bardugo’s homeland is, because in the description of Ravka, the Sulia deserts, and sometimes Ketterdam, one can find references to Israel over and over again; in Fjerd one can easily recognize Sweden, Iceland, and – just think! – Germany before the outbreak of the First World War, and Ketterdam is a wonderful mixture of the Netherlands and London. I would like to note that the cover of the second part, The Kingdom of Crooks, looks much more pleasing to the eye than the version used by the Russian publisher. The fact that it is original is, frankly, of little concern.
The only drawback is the translation – and it has grown so large that sometimes you want to cry while flipping through the pages. This is because,

The fantasy world is very well spelled out. Beautiful edition with a beautiful map on the front cover.
It took me a very long time to get excited, it wasn’t clear what the Grishas were (turns out there is a separate series of books about them) I spent half the book trying to figure out their subspecies, but I don’t think I ever could.
A gang of teenage misfits from the street are trying to pull off the kidnapping of the century that will make them fabulously rich or kill them.
Each member of the gang has talents and is the best at what they do. Kaz Brecker is their genius ringleader, and he’s the one who brought them all together. He always has a plan, then a backup plan and an ace up his sleeve.
Events unfold, and we gradually get to know the characters, their personalities, their past and their motives for going on a deadly mission.
It is good that they took this case, not to save the world, but for profit. But as for the criminals and crooks from the street, they were too much nobility, compassion and kindness.
Too sweet, I could say. We got out of all the trouble, even if on the verge of death, but still quite easily. And by the end, no one was lost. The writing style is adolescent enough, although the characters’ actions and reasoning do not correspond to the stated age.

I’ve heard of the writer Lee Bardugo many times. It’s just that the reviews of her books were almost all positive.
So I decided to buy some books for myself, and I started with the dilogy.
The first two hundred or even two hundred and fifty pages were very difficult for me.
There were too many characters, some incomprehensible events, different groups dividing the territory among themselves, people with special needs….
My head just hurt from all this.
Later I got a little involved in the plot, but the book didn’t evoke any special emotions.
At the beginning I liked Matthias and Nina, then I started to look at Kaz, so he is also in my favorites
I didn’t like that the characters were children, teenagers, and they were already smarter than any adult.
They didn’t think like children, their actions were too adult, and the dialogues were too childish.
I will definitely read the second part, but I don’t know when.
You need a special mood for this book.
My rating is 3.5 out of 5.
Perhaps after the sequel my impression will change.
I will not advise you, decide for yourself whether to read it or not

“The Six of Crows by Lee Bardugo is one of my favorite fantasy stories for teenagers that I’ve ever read, and I’m very glad I did, because I’m less and less attracted to such teenage stories. But not this one. I’ve already bought the sequel, and I can’t wait to get to it.
At the very beginning, it was a bit difficult for me to figure out what was going on, because another trilogy by the author introduces us to this fantasy world in more detail, but I trusted the person who recommended this book to me and continued reading. And eventually I figured it all out on my own. Conclusion: you can start getting acquainted with the series with The Six of Crows, but you need to be patient at the very beginning.
I was very impressed by the characters – bright, versatile, with interesting personalities. My favorite was the storyline of Nina and Matayas, for some reason I got into their stories the most.
Also, the setting is very evocative – the author has done such a good job of describing the streets, buildings, and characters’ clothes that it took me no effort to visualize it all. I was delighted with her descriptions.
And, of course, the story is interesting.
I recommend it!

I bought into the general hype around this series of books.
It is a favorite of many book bloggers, both abroad and here.
And, although I’m not a big fan of fantasy (the Harry Potter series is an exception, it’s wonderful), I started reading the first book in the series.
Already in the process of reading, I found out that this is the second series of books in this magical world of Grisha.
And in general, this whole world of Grisha is based on Russian culture, or something like that.
This has already diminished my enthusiasm.
And this moment, that this is the second series in this magical world, basically explains the fact that the author does not really reveal all the principles of the magical system. Therefore, a reader who was not familiar with the main series simply plunges blindly into this world and has to figure out its features himself.
What I liked about the author’s writing style is its unpredictability. Starting to read certain scenes, you think you are reading one thing, but in the end everything turns out to be radically different. This is exactly what kept me reading.
But, in the end, the book turned out to be neutral for me. I did not fully immerse myself in the world, and the characters did not sink into my soul either. But the book ended in such a way that I will have to read the next one to find out what happened to the characters.
