“Matilda is a true classic of children’s world literature by British writer Roald Dahl.
The story centers on the life and adventures of a little girl named Matilda. She is an extremely gifted and intelligent child for her age, born into a family of absolutely stupid, lazy and “amoebic” parents and has a brother who has completely turned out like his mom and dad. It is not easy for the girl to win the right to read books freely and be who she wants to be. At school, the situation doesn’t improve: the labeled kid finds herself in the crosshairs of a cruel and bloodthirsty principal, but instead finds support from her class teacher, Miss Hania, with whom they will begin to make incredible discoveries about Matilda’s abilities
This is a very funny, sarcastic and instructive book that opens your eyes to many aspects that are not childish at all. Adults are sometimes completely uneducated, and children, on the contrary, are intelligent and articulate, but “ageism” does not allow them to be who they want to be and does not allow society to perceive them as full-fledged individuals. And the friendship between Miss Honey and Matilda is a very sensitive storyline – the girl found real support in the woman, in fact, Miss Honey became her real mother, who appreciated all Matilda’s features and talents.

Roald Dahl is a very specific author whose works often contain mockery, violence, intimidation, harassment, bullying, and a lot of other cruelties alongside excellent humor. So, when choosing which of his books to read for the first time, we decided on Matilda. I just thought that a book about a 5-6 year old girl could not be as cruel as Airborne, Witches, or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was somewhat reassured by the fact that in 1988 Matilda was recognized as the world’s best children’s book. However, I was wrong.
As soon as we started reading this book, the children immediately divided into 2 camps. We have a girl who loves listening/reading/buying books, and a boy who cringes when he hears the word “library” and twitches when reminded to read. So, for the former, Matilda was another interesting adventure, and for the latter, it was a complete disappointment. Personally, I’m still undecided.
If the indifference of the parents towards Matilda could still be perceived somehow calmly, then the bullying of the principal Trunchbul over the students of the school is beyond the pale! I don’t understand why none of the children complained to their parents. Do all families in this village have problems with trust? Hasn’t a single student “grown up” to tell the truth and protect the younger students during the time that Tranchbulka has been the principal?
All the children are quite positive characters. Matilda is one of the few who, although afraid, still stands up to the stupidity, indifference, and cruelty of adults. And she does it in a special and terribly funny way! Somehow, the author rushes from one extreme to another throughout the story, sometimes frightening the reader, and sometimes making them laugh until they feel stomach cramps.
The main character is a little girl, but I would recommend reading the book to older children, about 9+, as well as adults, maybe someone will recognize themselves? I saw myself in some places and now I’m trying to change.
As for the quality of the design, text, and translation, I have no complaints, everything is on top, as always!

I have loved this book with all my heart since childhood and never get tired of re-reading the story of Matilda, a brave, funny, talented and very clever girl.
The main character is admirable from the first pages, especially her love for books. A true book lover will definitely see Matilda as a like-minded person.
However, she faces rejection in her own family; her parents do not understand her passion for literature, because none of them read books except for the young heroine. It’s a symbolic confrontation of interests that leaves you feeling indifferent.
The book also contains humor, funny situations, and childish manifestations of cruelty. There is even telekinesis. Such a set of storylines adds vibrancy to the story, there is no time to get bored, the plot is addictive.
The protagonist’s family is a certain negative side, they are indifferent and rejecting. But Matilda herself and her teacher Hanna support the side of good.
The ending, as for me, is positive, although it is difficult for me to understand the attitude of Matilda’s parents, but they still found an opportunity to make a good step towards their daughter.
It is not for nothing that this book is a leader in various literary ratings. In addition to an interesting plot with a wonderful girl in the spotlight, Roald Dahl’s novel highlights the eternal question of parents and children, difficulties in understanding, adult immunity and, as a result, the loneliness of the child.
I recommend Matilda to everyone – both adults and children!

Roald Dahl is already a classic. Who doesn’t know about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or hasn’t heard the name Matilda?
The book is about anti-hero parents, a school principal of extreme cruelty, and terrible injustice. It’s hyperbolic, which is why it touches you so much. But it ends with a happy ending.
The girl was unlucky to be born into a family of, to put it mildly, unreasonable parents. They are not interested in the child at all!
Matilda is a genius. She is learning to read on her own. But there are no books at home, absolutely none.
The biggest book lover (of all the book characters I know) reads children’s books in the library on her own and then takes up adult books.
The girl goes to school at the age of 5. She is developed, unread, smart, and a math genius. She has a class with a wonderful teacher, and a school with a principal who is a monster. Intimidation of children, physical abuse. It’s a complete nightmare!
A little bit of mysticism will help the extraordinary Matilda to overcome all evil.
Parents and teachers may not like the book

I generally love Roald Dahl’s unexpected and clever style, and this book is probably my favorite of all those published in Ukrainian to date. The story is about a girl who learned to read on her own at the age of three, and lived in a family where reading is not only not accepted, but almost shameful. Matilda is bullied, and she secretly takes revenge. But the girl’s most important adventures begin when she starts going to school and her teacher discovers that among the ordinary first-graders there is a special student who is thirsty for knowledge and developed beyond her years. This teacher annoyed me a lot because of her naivety, passivity, and inability to defend her opinion or even stand up for herself.
But my favorite character, who does not evoke any positive impressions (except for how beautifully written), is the principal of Matilda’s school, Miss Trunchbull. At some point, the work crosses the line and involves elements of magical realism, which (I won’t spoil it) was unexpected and interesting for me.
The book can be read by an adult in two hours. As always, the A-BA-BI edition is excellent.
