Lilian and Clerf are two different people who got a moment of happiness that they tried to use to the fullest. It is hard to say whether there was a feeling between them that could be called love, but they were happy, even if it was for a very short moment, but this moment was theirs. Today, in times of war, Remarque’s books are perceived in a completely different way, the actions of his characters become more understandable, and their statements become quotes that you like. Remarque’s works teach us to love life and enjoy it here and now, while we have it.

This is a book from which phrases can be parsed into quotes. In fact, Remarque has no bad books, but this is one of his best. It can be safely placed in the top five of the author’s best works.
The lives of a couple of main characters are on the verge of death, which is why they are not too concerned about the future. They try to take everything from their lives, realizing that they have little time.
Clerf, a race car driver, arrives at one of the best sanatoriums in the Alps for tuberculosis patients to visit his friend. However, in the sanatorium, he develops a liking for a patient there, Lilian. She is young and attractive, but completely devastated from the inside. Her depressing life in the sanatorium is illuminated by her acquaintance with Clerf, who eventually offers Lilian to run away with him to the ends of the earth. The girl logically decides that she has nothing to lose in this life, and therefore must not waste the short time she has left. From that moment on, an amazing love adventure begins, full of travels and discoveries, philosophical reflections and tragic events…
Love cannot be postponed “for later” – live here and now! There may not be another moment, so take the risk so that you don’t have to regret it later. The meaning of life is not in its search, but in life itself. Surrender to the wave of love, don’t be afraid to open your heart to new feelings… Life is unfairly short, so take everything you can from it!

The main character, Lillian, can seem like a selfish and frivolous person, and she has her reasons. She tries to get the most out of life, she lives for today, she sews herself beautiful clothes, visits restaurants, travels, spends all her savings, as there is no point in saving money. Her ability to live and enjoy every moment is very inspiring to stop and enjoy what she has.
The main character, Clairfais, is a car racer. His occupation lends itself to risk and at any moment he could lose his life, but he does not treasure it as much as the heroine. Clairfais is more concerned about his feelings, about love.
The characters in the novel become infatuated with each other. They are given the opportunity to spend a few weeks together and experience fleeting happiness as well as a sense of mutual love. This is a brutal, yet touching and beautiful story of two doomed people. A man who knows he has little to live for, tries to live at least a little of a healthy life, but very often realizes that this is not his life.
After reading a novel that describes the thirst for life in people on the brink, you unwillingly begin to rethink your attitude toward life, because it is so fleeting and irretrievable.

“Life on Loan” is a novel about the postwar period, love, and the lust for life. Unlike Remarque’s other works, the focus here is not only on the theme of the lost generation. The main characters, on the contrary, live for the present, appreciate every moment, because they remember all the horrors of war.
⠀
A young girl, Lilian, after her wartime wanderings, finds herself in a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients as a teenager. In the mountains, far from real life, she spends her “best” years of youth. The girl decides to leave the sanatorium, “running from death to life” and at least for the rest of her days to taste freedom.
⠀
Clerf is a race car driver who also lives in the here and now. But his life is about racing, parties, women, and fame. The fates of these characters suddenly intersect. Will they realize what they are striving for? The ending is quite unexpected and, of course, as in most of Remarque’s works, without a happy ending.
This book makes you think about the true values of life and its transience. You immediately want to live it, enjoying every moment.

The book is completely in the style of Remarque. Like other books by the author, it does not leave the reader indifferent. Remarque is one of those writers who know how to penetrate the innermost depths of his readers’ souls. That’s why we love him. His entire work is permeated with unhappy love, in which there is always separation and death, which come just when it seems that the lives of the characters are getting better and nothing will prevent them from being together. One can understand why the author wrote such books by recalling the period of his youth. It was the period of the two largest wars in history, between which his country experienced many social upheavals, starting with incredible hyperinflation, when money could easily depreciate in one day, and ending with the rise to power of a dictator for whom human life meant nothing. The only difference in this book is that here the woman’s illness, which deprives her of the opportunity to live a full life, has become an obstacle to the happy life of the lovers. However, this does not deter the protagonist from trying to make the woman happy. No matter what, he wants to give her the whole world. This book is not just about unhappy love, it is also about courage, about the absence of fear of facing death, which is getting closer every day.
