The plot. Diana, a young woman in her mid-thirties, lost her husband and daughter in a car accident. After their deaths, Diana experiences depressive feelings: she lives alone, is bored with her job, doesn’t want to see anyone except her friend Felix, even her parents; she is forced to “go out into the world of living people” because she runs out of food. The feeling of pain is so strong that for two years after the funeral, Diana never visited the cemetery to avoid experiencing this pain again. The belongings of the dead are also untouched. Everything remains as it was before. It seems to reflect the frozen state of Diana’s mind. Then she goes to Ireland and returns home a different person. Sitting in her favorite cafe, she saw the name: “Happy People”. What influenced Diana’s “thawing”?

Is it possible to live happily after the death of your closest people? This novel by the French writer Agnès Martin-Logan tells us about a young woman, Diana, whose husband and daughter die in a car accident. The heroine has a very difficult time dealing with their death. She closes herself off from the outside world, from people. A year after the tragedy, the heroine travels to Ireland in the hope of forgetting everything… Will the woman be able to return to her past life, learn to feel and love again?

The novel is written in a very emotional way, with clearly drawn characters, especially the protagonist. This is exactly the case when you believe in a woman’s pain and experience it together with her. I read the novel in one breath in two days, because I really wanted to know the outcome. It surprised me in a good way, not predictable, not like in many such novels. In this book, you can find pain, emotions, suffering, love, and life from a different perspective. Not in every novel of this kind do you find this, feel such sincere emotions. Special thanks for the design of the book, it is a beautiful design that complements the atmosphere and plot of this book. I highly recommend it!

This author’s book confused me completely.

At the beginning, reading it, I thought it would be my favorite of the year.

And really, everything was there: the brokenness, the depression, the difficult character of the main character, as well as her best friend Felix who is trying to pull her out of a deep hole.

It wasn’t easy for her at all. She was left without a husband and a daughter, sad and grieving. Finally, she mustered her strength and went to another country, found her man, and…left him.

WHAT?!

Seriously, I didn’t get that twist.

A lot in common.

Love.

They really had it all! And she rejected him, leaning towards the version that “she can’t love him the way she loves her husband, even if he’s in his coffin for the past few years.”

In general, the book is interesting, but here is the main character Diana contradicts herself. She went to find herself, and ended up losing herself even more.

Yes, the book is very light, I read it in 1.5 hours, but I was seriously waiting for the happy ending as suddenly.

Honestly, I’m still sad. Edward dropped everything for her, put his pride aside and came to beg her forgiveness. And she went back to Paris. She gave up their relationship, her new happy life, and gave this man up to the unknown. She considered killing him morally, and yet he loved her.

Yes, she said she could be with him one day.

But one day he won’t be able to be with her.

That was the end of it.

What a woman whose husband and daughter died in a disaster needs is support. But not always the family can understand this. When the family is interested in how they will look in the world, in front of people. What will people say? And what is in the heart of a daughter who lost everything at one point.

The only person who understands her, supports her, and even took over their joint business is her best friend. Who eventually wants to pull her out of her sadness with all his heart.

The only salvation for her is a vacation. To change the city, the country. To go where no one lets her go. Where her husband has always wanted to go.

Her family is just two people who have never believed in her or supported her in their lives. For them, she cannot live on her own, she is an eternal child, unable to decide anything. And here is Ireland, not knowing how long she is going for, and most importantly, alone.

Ireland became a reboot for her. And at the same time a test of fate. Where people are different and where completely strangers began to treat her like family. And finally, love reappears in her life, but it’s difficult. For her, this is a test, and on the one hand she thinks it is a betrayal, but over time her thoughts will change.

The book perfectly shows that no matter how much we hurt, we cannot hide from everyone and everything. For a person to start living, they need to tell someone what hurts their heart and soul. But to someone who will really understand and support. That’s what Diana, the main character, did, strangers believed in her, and her family believed that she should forget everything at once. And live the way she used to.

The title of the book shows that happy people read books and drink coffee, but only when everything is fine and you can enjoy it. But when everything in your life goes to hell at one point, all you want to do is drink Irish beer and smoke. Because then you fall into the world of your own pain, which your old happy life shows you.
