There are no words necessary to describe the charm of this story.
It’s a beautiful family story in the best Flagg tradition. I was struck by how easily and calmly the two eras are combined, how gently a simple story is intertwined with simultaneous impulses to reflect.
At first, the reader may get confused by so many characters in the story, but once you cross this line, it is simply impossible to tear yourself away from the story.
There are jokes and important topics here: racism, the problem of parents and children, disabilities, etc., as well as interesting adventures and new acquaintances. A book that is stitched through with comfort and warmth. A book that has definitely become a favorite.

Fanny Flagg’s books have a certain atmosphere, a flavor of their own. They are unusual, the author does not always focus on the dynamism of the plot, but rather on human feelings. That is why this book for me has the flavor of sincere human feelings, relationships, help and kindness.
We have two storylines: a conversation between Evelyn and Ninnie about their town and the past of this town and its inhabitants. Ninni herself and her sister, who ran a café near the railroad called “The Stop”, are also part of this story. Those who needed to stop there could do so. Their specialty was fried green tomatoes, and they could even eat there for free.
The author draws attention to the problem of racial discrimination. In those days, this problem was more acute, but we should not assume that it has been completely resolved. We should not forget about it. The 20s and 30s were difficult not only for America but for the whole world. Many countries were recovering from the war. Human rights had not yet become so widespread, and few people talked about them. The rights of blacks and women were not recognized, and it is worth knowing about this.
In general, I really liked the book, it has a good atmosphere. Although at times it is very sad and emphasizes injustice, it does not spoil the overall picture.

The book leaves you with a pleasant feeling of peace and love. It’s about banal but important things. The main thing for the characters is to always remain human and not to betray themselves and their feelings. These people are not perfect at all, but they are so close… They find joy in small things and know how to love.
The most important pains of humanity are mentioned here: discrimination against women, racism, love between two young ladies…
The story takes place in the Rose Terrace nursing home. There, Evelyn Couch, a 48-year-old woman who has lost faith in life, meets an old lady named Ninnie Treadgood. They become friends and every week Evelyn comes to the house to visit her new friend. And she tells her an extremely interesting story about life in the city of Wisłów Staw in the 1920s and 1930s.
The amazing thing is that even during the Great Depression, people thought not only about themselves. They knew how to live, valued friendship, and didn’t leave anyone to fend for themselves.
Without a doubt, this book occupies an important place on the shelf of my home library and I will definitely re-read it.

“Fried Green Tomatoes at the Bus Stop” is an amazing story about friendship, life, loyalty and love, which we get to know through the eyes of an old Mrs. Ninnie Treadgood, who is visited in a nursing home by a woman named Evelyn Couch. All her life, Evelyn has felt out of place, she feels that life is over and has passed her by, although she is not yet fifty, and sometimes even thinks about suicide. They meet by chance, but this friendship and acquaintance opens Evelyn’s eyes to a lot of things, and the main thing is that she regains the lust for life that her new optimistic friend instilled in her. Ninni tells her about her life and youth, about her family and friends, whose everyday life was closely organized around the café “Zupynka” run by Ninni’s sister and her lover. We learn a great deal about the lives and adventures, both happy and tragic, of the residents of Wisl Stop, and we are immersed in the life of America in the 20s and 30s: The Great Depression, racial discrimination, injustice against women…
