Forest song

Synopsys by Lesya Ukrainka
The unsurpassed Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913) wrote her masterpiece, the drama-enchantment Forest Song, in distant lands when she was very homesick. Especially her native Kolodyazhne, where “on a moonlit night I would run alone into the forest and wait for Mavka to appear to me. This image fascinated me for the rest of my life.” That longing, apparently, inspired the poet to tell so painfully about the tragedy of life for those who become empty in their souls, renounce their purest feelings, and extinguish their impulse to create. In fact, by betraying his forest bride, the protagonist betrays himself. Because Mavka is the soul without which a person turns into a werewolf.

Lesya Ukrainka’s work is one of the most beautiful achievements in the heritage of Ukrainian classical literature. The works of this writer, despite their genre diversity, leave equally strong impressions and touch the most intimate strings of the soul.

“The Forest Song” is a story of destructive love. A forest nymph, having fallen in love with an ordinary young man, gives up everything just to be with her beloved. However, Lukash is not enchanted by the beautiful nymph and does not appreciate her at all, cheating on her with others…

This is such a wonderful dramatic work that I will never tire of recommending it to one and all. The story is very easy to read, but it stays in your memory for a long time. That’s why I definitely give it 5/5!
