Valerian Pidmohylnyi

City.

Valeriyan Pidmohylnyi (1901-1937) was a Ukrainian writer and translator, one of the most prominent prose writers of the Ukrainian “executed revival.” Almost a hundred years have passed since the novel The City was written, but it is still relevant today. Even today, dreamers set out on wanderings, leaving their homes in villages in search of a better life, and they do not always find what they are looking for. Stepan Radchenko, a young, energetic village boy, comes to Kyiv, enters an economic university, and hopes to return to his village with new knowledge. He meets a village girl, Nadia, and studies hard at the institute, but his pride and ambition take their toll, and Stepan decides to conquer the city… After the mass repression of the intelligentsia in the 1930s, which also included Valerian Pidmohylnyi, the novel The City, like other works by the writer, was banned until 1989. The “Native” series also includes Pidmohylnyi’s books “The Good God. Stories”, “A Small Drama”.

Perhaps the negative traits of the hero give us a reason to think about our behavior in society then and now, comparing and understanding the essence of the work.

My subjective opinion is that the work is worthy of attention. There are grounds to draw your own conclusions. I completely disagree with some of the protagonist’s words, but that’s what’s cool. The hero is not so clear and simple… Not so “good”.

So, enjoy reading, whoever decides to read it.

Perhaps, given my age, I did not fully understand the book (and I am not a literary critic or book-talker), but I found it very misogynistic (which was incredibly annoying throughout the book and for which I lowered the score) and masculine. However, this is the first book in my life where negative character traits predominate in the main character, which was very surprising and made me think. There is a small percentage that I will change my assessment, because I had to think about the content and meaning of the book for quite a long time. And it is also difficult to read, really, very difficult!

I read the novel in winter, first abridged, because I was preparing for exams and didn’t have time to read it in full, but to be honest I didn’t really appreciate it then (as I do now), maybe it wasn’t my genre or my mood. In the summer, I decided to read the whole thing and I don’t regret it. After all, you need to know the classics. The book was sent very quickly and arrived in good condition. I have more questions to the publishing house itself in terms of design (it is low in quality). Therefore, I do not advise you to buy “The City” in this edition, but if you are more interested in the content of the book, then buy it.
