Synopsys by Andriy Semyankiv
Book 1: Evidence-based medicine and not so much
50% of medicines on planet Earth are prescribed incorrectly. On the same planet, 50% of patients take their medications the wrong way. Not very optimistic, of course. Add to this alternative medicine, homeopathy, insta-gurus without medical education who give their advice left and right, and bacteria trained by our “preventive” use of antibiotics – and you get the full picture.
The book by Andriy Semyankiv, a doctor and author of the popular medical blog MED GOblin, is a kind of guide to the medical jungle: from how medicines work and what is hidden behind traditional medicine, homeopathy, and stem cells, to conspiracy theories and skills to recognize prescribed fungicides.
Why are the bacteria on the hospital floor more dangerous than those in your kitchen? How do anti-vaccination myths spread, and why does the Queen need a homeopath? Why can antibiotics usually be combined with alcohol (and what do beer, gonorrhea, and syphilis have to do with it)? What do oxolinic ointment and hematogen actually do, and is it worth covering your body with tapes? The author of the book also talks about herbal medicine, boiled potato inhalation, diets, injections, umbilical cord blood, and other progressive (not really) techniques, while explaining how to critically analyze medical information.
Book 2. Dancing with Bones
A simple, at first glance, story about a failed pathologist. Severin is not appreciated at work and is poorly paid, and something incomprehensible is happening to his personal life, his self-esteem is at zero. So, being practically at the bottom, he immediately jumps at the opportunity to earn extra money. Yes, the offer is not entirely legal, and yes, one can hardly expect anything good from the organ transplantation market, but it is so tempting to finally make a comfortable life for himself. In the end, Severin has to take a trinket from dead people, something they don’t need anyway. Still from dead people, still a trinket.
Step by step, decision by decision, the pathologist changes and transforms himself, so that the despised man on the verge of alcoholism first grows self-confidence, and then unscrupulousness.
Having committed one crime, it is much easier for him to commit another, and the next. What Severin considered unacceptable yesterday becomes the new normal. And the question arises: is he able to stop now and how far can he go?
Andriy Semyankiv is a physician and author of the medical blog MED GOblin, PhD in medicine. He has worked in anesthesiology and intensive care for over 14 years. In addition to his medical practice, Andriy participated in international clinical trials and trained civilian and military doctors. He started his blog on social media while working abroad. Since then, Andriy has explained to tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people that patients have the right to know what they are being treated with and why, that doctors are also human beings who can make mistakes, that medicine is not a secret for the elite but rather clear scientific knowledge, and that everyone must take responsibility for their own health and treatment.
