The introduction of a person into the rich universe of A Song of Ice and Fire from the very first pages cannot be called smooth, the author does not aim to explain and chew the whole background of the world to the reader, and familiarize him with it – the reader must draw a conclusion for himself, and soon be horrified by how this world is similar to ours.
The story described in 5 volumes gives the reader a glimpse of the apocalypse and the fulfillment of ancient prophecies through the eyes of characters living in this world; a world where winter and summer last for several years, and sometimes even decades. It is a complex and “multi-layered” work, with numerous plot interweaving. Prophecies about the apocalypse are just a fairy tale for the people of the mainland; people’s belief in the so-called “magic”, which in our world could be more likely to be equated with Satanism, has long since faded away. For many centuries, the inhabitants of the mainland had not witnessed anything truly magical, so for people it later became just a fairy tale, and magic was compared to myth. Mercantile lords are at each other’s throats and plotting treasonous acts to keep the enemy off the throne, and in the midst of it all, the world is threatened with death, which only a few, the marginalized, who have been either voluntarily or forcibly sent to the “wall,” a 700-foot ice wall that protects the world from what lies beyond, built thousands of years ago. For people, it is only a symbolism, a piece of history, a place to send lawless people.
People are familiar with the universe from the TV series, so you can forget about everything you’ve watched, the screenwriters have rewritten, and one might say adapted the plot of the novels to the cinematic style, and mercilessly cut out important plot twists. The cycle of novels A Song of Ice and Fire is a completely different story, different from the series, and similar to it only in key points.

There are probably very few people who have not heard of Game of Thrones.
I am one of those people who love this series. But I am just starting to get acquainted with the books.
What can I say about the first part? The events unfold in the same way as in the first season of the series. So for me, who has seen the first season more than once, there were no surprises and I knew in advance what would happen. Did it make you bored? No, it wasn’t. Because there are a lot of events, all bright and unexpected.
What is the book about? It’s about the struggle for the throne. About honor and betrayal. About love and death. About dragons and the awakened dead.
Winter is coming…

Undoubtedly, the cycle “A Song of Ice and Fire” and, of course, its first book “Game of Thrones”, which has already been instilled in the minds of huge masses of fans of this story as the title of the whole cycle, cannot leave anyone indifferent! The work definitely captivates with its thoughtfulness to the smallest detail, the incredible scale of both events and the number of characters and storylines. A truly epic creation! Everything is extremely realistic, truthful, without any pathetic, melodramatic, preachy, childish, etc. It’s like real life, a real story of real people and countries. Although it is a fantasy, the emotions, thoughts, intrigues, political and military struggles are not fantasy at all. Only in the later books do dragons and the undead come into play, but how can you do without them? This is what adds to the interest! And all of this is also thought out and woven into the fabric of reality.
The first book will delight the reader with its dynamism and I note that here the events unfold faster and more intensely than in the following books, where the pace slows down and sharp plot twists or significant events already occur 1-2 times per book.
My only comment is on the design of the new edition of the series by KM-Books, which deviated from its first version when it published all the books in the usual format and with covers depicting the characters in their images from the series. The previous edition was, in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing. Also, the smaller format was more convenient to use. Here, the paper is a little bit worse, and the price is higher. At first I thought that maybe they added illustrations, but no…
However, despite the shortcomings of the publisher, the text itself does not diminish its exceptional value! I definitely advise everyone to buy and read it!

I’ll start by saying that this is a very beautiful edition. The cover, the font, the maps – it all makes you feel like you’re holding a secret book of magic in your hands)). But the minus-it’s not practical, you can’t read it on the road, and you can’t take it with you. For a collection would be good, beautiful. Here’s another question to the publisher, whether the re-release of the next parts, because it would be a shame for such money not to be able to collect all the books in the series in the same style.
In essence and plot, the book is better than the series unequivocally. First, you understand the motivations of the characters and their feelings better. Secondly, in the series every 5 minutes there must be naked people, scenes of violence and blood, otherwise it is not interesting. In the book, moments of vulgarity, vulgarity are found, but they are not so shouty perceived. Each chapter is narrated directly from a specific protagonist, which gives you the opportunity to look at the situation from different angles. The characters are all vivid, interesting to read and because of the poignant turns of events. It’s interesting because of the plot twists and turns, but what’s confusing is the young characters, because we see stately, adult actors in the series, and in the book they are 12-16 years old kids.
In general, you should read the book first and only then watch the show, so as not to spoil the impression. But in any case, worth the time it took. 100 out of 10.
