How do we perceive traditional history books? A lot of text, a lot of dates that are impossible to remember, black and white photos and drawings. And it is not surprising that many children (and adults) do not understand and are not interested in it.

It is the authors of this book who have changed the idea of an interesting history of our Ukraine that children will want to read. Why? Because it has everything that is interesting and easy to remember:

-A colorful map showing territories and data, with descriptions next to it;

-A mini-comic for each chapter (when superheroes are historical figures and creators of our history)

-A certain era is tied to the commander and the hero, according to the chronology of development.

Given the small volume of the book, it covers the period from the ancient ages (BC) to the present. The advantage of this study is that children do not get confused in the details, but learn the basics, which they can study in detail from other sources if they wish. And you will agree that it is easier to remember.

I recommend it to students and their parents. And also for those who had a hard time with history at school.

This book is now practically a history textbook for my fourth-grade son. I would even say that it was his first exposure to “serious”, generalized history, if we don’t take into account the individual historical episodes that are mentioned in elementary school. He especially liked the comics that accompany each page – they create a complete picture and allow you to convey the emotions of historical characters and the atmosphere of events. The material is presented in a concise and interesting way, the main topics are covered, they are understandable to both adults and children, although sometimes a little overloaded with terms. There are a lot of illustrations, which is also important for reading by children. The only wish, perhaps for the next reprint of the book, is for more information about the modern history of the state (twentieth century and present), because the ancient history of Ukraine can be read from many sources, but the events of recent decades are not covered so intensively, especially for children and youth.

A very interesting, useful, and necessary book for a true little Ukrainian, for the formation of a child’s national consciousness. This book can also be a real help when studying history at school. Studying history will turn into an exciting and interesting journey into the past. After all, studying anything, whether it is history, chemistry, or math, should be interesting and exciting.

The book “The Painted History of Ukraine’s Independence” is published by Zelenyi Pis in Ukrainian. Recommended for children aged nine and older. This book is special because it is significantly different from all the others. It covers all the main events of Ukraine’s independence. It covers many historical figures of Ukraine. Also, the most interesting and at the same time funny is the historical comic strip, the authors did a great job, it turned out very well. They are present on almost every page of the book.

“The Pictorial History of Ukraine’s Independence is positioned as a literary and artistic publication. One of its features is its good reference character, as it is based on facts confirmed by primary sources. The authors were wise to create the book: they used the help of historians, cultural critics, and philosophers. The main idea of the book is that independence did not fall on Ukrainians from the sky. That is why reading it to adults together with children will help the former to structure the facts they know, and the latter to show that there were many events, figures, and stories in the history of our country that we should be proud of. The book is 80 pages long, which does not make reading boring. The main outline of all the key moments in the history of Ukraine is clearly structured. The introduction to the book is a good idea: on the first flyleaf there is a diagram “Ukraine – Chronology of Statehood”. Each topic is presented on one spread (there are 38 such spreads), which includes: text (marked with different types of fonts for easier perception of information, a visual image or portrait of one of the historical figures, comics, and a color map). The text is easy to read, clear, concise, and engaging; the maps are informative and at the same time not overloaded with unnecessary information. In principle, the book is designed for different age groups. However, if you want to tell a primary school child about the history of Ukraine before it is studied in secondary school, you should make the reading a joint endeavor. I would also recommend it for reading to older people who went to school during the Soviet era and, accordingly, do not know the holistic concept of the formation of Ukrainian statehood. Many of the stories will be an interesting discovery for them.
